The central Inner Mongolia, located at the intersection of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is crucial for deciphering the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution associated with the subduction and closure of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO). Our study focused on petrology, detrital zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb geochronology and whole‐rock geochemistry for the Late Carboniferous to Permian sandstones within the Shuanmazhuang, Dahongshan, Naobaogou, and Laowopu formations in Siziwang Banner, central Inner Mongolia. This comprehensive analysis shed light on the dynamic interplay between the NCC and the South Mongolia Block. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages in investigated samples mainly cluster between 250 and 2650 Ma, with significant peaks at 2.4–2.5 Ga, 1.8–2.0 Ga, 400–430 Ma, and 250–320 Ma, respectively. The geochemistry data are characterized by SiO2 contents (56.29–77.95 wt. %), Na2O / K2O ratios (0.45–1.58) and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios between 4.33 and 7.44. Moreover, they exhibit the slight enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (Rb and Ba) and the depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Ta, Th, and U). These facts indicate that the sedimentary detritus predominantly originates from felsic sources, probably deriving from the Late Carboniferous–Permian continental island arc‐related intermediate‐acid igneous rocks, the Late Ordovician‐Silurian magmatic rocks in the Bainaimiao arc and the basements of the NCC. Furthermore, our present results also suggest that during the Early–Middle Permian, accelerating oceanic crust subduction triggered significant magmatic events in Siziwang Banner, leading to rapid uplift and the erosion of arc magmatic rocks, as well as the abundant corresponding sediments. Subsequently, the gradual convergence and eventual collision between the NCC and the Southern Mongolian Block took place at the end of the Permian, representing final closure of the PAO. Aim: The evolutionary interactions between western spadefoot toads (genus Spea) represent a textbook example of character displacement, facilitated by dietary specialization of one Spea species on fairy shrimp (Anostraca) when all three co‐occur. The aim of this study is to understand the covariation between predator (Spea) and prey (Anostraca) range shifts in response to climate change oscillations, and whether biotic interactions can be used to project species distribution models on different time scales when studying species with dietary specialization. Methods: Using multiple modelling techniques, we first estimated the potential distribution of central and western North American fairy shrimp species (Crustacea: Anostraca) and two western spadefoot toad species (Spea bombifrons and Spea multiplicata). We then created a shrimp species richness map by aggregating individual species estimates. Third, we studied the relationship between the probability of spadefoot toad presence and fairy shrimp species richness during the present and Last Glacial Maximum conditions. Finally, we estimated the strength and direction of the co‐occurrence between spadefoot toads and fairy shrimp sampled at the level of entire predicted range and at the regional level (allopatric and sympatric). Results: First, the same abiotic environmental variables shape spadefoot toad and fairy shrimp species' distributions in central and western North America across time. Second, areas of sympatry of Spea bombifrons and Spea multiplicata correspond with dry conditions and higher shrimp richness. Finally, the spatial patterns of predator–prey co‐occurrence are highly variable across geography, forming a spatial mosaic over the species' ranges. Main Conclusion: Predator–prey relationships form a spatial mosaic across geography and species ranges. Including biotic interactions into species distribution estimates for organisms with dietary specialization is highly recommended. It is widely acknowledged that thermal models clearly demonstrate that crustal magma bodies should solidify rapidly upon emplacement. Small plutons can cool below the solidus in thousands of years, while even large plutons require hundreds of thousands of years, but not more than a million years. However, recent U-Pb zircon geochronological data contradict these results, strongly suggesting that magmatic systems are often characterized by protracted events. Therefore, a conceptual framework that reconciles thermal models and the geochronology data is necessary. The Devonian foreland magmatism of the Sierra de San Luis is made up of two distinctive suites, the Monzonite suite (<65 wt.% SiO2) and the Granite suite (>65 wt.% SiO2), both emplaced at ca. 3.7 kbar. Classification of the studied Devonian granitoids is debatable because they have a hybrid I- to A-type granite signature. Based on a robust geochronological U-Pb zircon dataset we corroborate the development of a protracted magmatic activity with three major crystallization events for this Devonian magmatism: 391 ± 1, 384 ± 1, and 379 ± 2 Ma. Considering these geochronological data, we postulate the presence of a deep mush reservoir, where a prolonged magmatic activity, permitted the prolonged crystallization of antecrysts (ca. 395–384 Ma). Migration of the parental magma from the mush reservoir zone occurred near the time of emplacement and culminated in the formation of an ephemeral magma chamber located at shallow levels, where zircon autocrysts crystallized (ca. 379 Ma). Age spectra reported within individual samples support the idea of a massive migration of magma when conditions were favourable (e.g. thermally matured crust). Individual crystallization ages recorded by monazites hosted in two-mica granites are comparable to those obtained from zircons, supporting the presence of a long-lasting hot source. Additional geochronological data indicate that a later thermal event (ca. 353 Ma) could have partially affected some areas of the Devonian magmatic zircons promoting Pb loss, with subsequent partial resetting of the isotopic clock. Modern analogues of Archaean charnockite are important because they facilitate investigations into processes of early crustal formation and tectonic transition. Herein, we present the results of the petrography, geochemistry, and isotope geochronology of Late Neoarchean charnockites in the Daqingshan terrane at the northern margin of the North China Craton. The sources, petrogenesis, and tectonic implications of the samples obtained are determined based on their geochemical characteristics. Charnockites mainly exhibit magnesian and calc–alkaline characteristics; furthermore, they contain high amounts of light rare-earth elements, with slightly positive Eu anomalies. Analysis of zircon U–Pb dating using a sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe reveals that Hademengou–Xiwulanbulang (HDMG–XWLBL) charnockites were emplaced during the (i) Late Neoarchean (ca. 2500 Ma), with zircon εHf(t) values ranging from 1.57 to 7.81; (ii) single-stage model ages (TDM1) from 2529 to 2637 Ma; and (iii) two-stage model ages (TDM2) from 2710 to 2820 Ma. A comparative study has performed on the petrography, geochemistry, and geochronology of charnockite and granulite shown that the parent magma of the charnockites is the product of the partial melting of granulite. Combining our results with geological data pertaining to the Archaean structural evolution of the Daqingshan terrane, we speculate that the Late Neoarchean HDMG–XWLBL charnockite was formed during a subduction-related thermo-tectonic event in the northern margin of the North China Craton. Mabel Creek Ridge, in the northern Gawler Craton, is a granulite‐facies domain recording early Mesoproterozoic metamorphism, flanked by less metamorphosed rocks and dissected by crustal‐scale divergent structures. The nature of early Mesoproterozoic events is poorly understood due to the lack of basement outcrop. Calculated metamorphic phase diagrams and geochronology are used to decipher the tectonic regime of a potential gneiss dome. Pressure–temperature (P–T) modelling of metapelites from five drill holes across Mabel Creek Ridge suggests it has experienced conditions of ~6.4–7.4 kbar and 800–850°C and the growth of suprasolidus cordierite after garnet indicates subsequent decompression. In situ U–Pb monazite and Lu–Hf garnet geochronology constrains the granulite‐facies metamorphism of Mabel Creek Ridge to ca. 1600–1560 Ma. In contrast, drill hole GOMA DH4 located to the north of Mabel Creek Ridge records conditions of 2.2–5.4 kbar and 710–740°C at ca. 1520 Ma, with no evidence for 1600–1560 Ma metamorphism. Our new P–T pseudosection results and geochronology data from Mabel Creek Ridge and adjacent crust, coupled with the regional seismic and airborne magnetic data, reveal that Mabel Creek Ridge represents a record of early Mesoproterozoic extension in the Gawler Craton, during which thermally perturbed lower crustal rocks were exhumed within a gneiss dome. Early Mesoproterozoic extension took place within a complex geodynamic regime resulting from the interplay between final Nuna convergence along the margin of northeast Australia at ca. 1600 Ma and subduction to the southwest at ca. 1630–1610 Ma. Transport properties of silicate melts control magma ocean dynamics on the early terrestrial planets and rocky exoplanets. Here we calculate the viscosity (transport of momentum) of peridotite liquid at potential magma ocean conditions (0–159 GPa, 2,200–6,000 K) using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We find that, unlike MgSiO3 or basaltic melts, the viscosity of the highly depolymerized peridotite liquid (a) increases monotonically with pressure without an anomalous drop and (b) is lower than those of other melts over the entire mantle pressure range. Low viscosity would promote fractional crystallization in a less polymerized magma ocean and thus contribute to mantle heterogeneity from its earliest stage. Given the compositional dependence of magma ocean properties, emphasis on multicomponent bulk silicate Earth‐like composition, instead of simple end‐members, are rendered necessary, in order to better understand high‐energy planetary accretion processes and their aftermaths. Plain Language Summary: In the aftermath of impacts, widely envisaged scenarios taking place on early terrestrial planets, the silicate mantle (i.e., rocks) experiences extreme temperatures that lead to extensive melting (i.e., magma ocean) on those planets. According to our supercomputer simulations, the viscosity of a magma depends on its composition, which can be as fluid as water for a silicate Earth‐like composition. Low viscosity entails vigorous convection, promoting fractional crystallization in the magma ocean. How and when sedimentary rocks record Earth's magnetic field is complex. Most studies assume a time‐progressive lock‐in mechanism during sediment deposition called depositional remanent magnetization (DRM). However, magnetic minerals can also form in situ, recording a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) that is discontinuous in time. Disentangling the two mechanisms represents a major hurdle, and differences in their recording efficiencies remain unexplored. Here, our theoretical solutions demonstrate that CRM intensities exceed DRM by a factor of six when acquired in the same magnetic field. Novel experiments growing greigite (Fe3S4) in sediments and subsequent redeposition under identical magnetic field conditions confirm the predicted difference in recording efficiency. Thus, if left unrecognized, CRM leads to overestimated paleointensity and deserves more attention when interpreting Earth's magnetic history from sedimentary records. Recognition of fundamental differences between CRM and DRM characteristics provide a way forward to distinguish the recording mechanisms through routine laboratory protocols. The western Argentinian sector of Gondwana has been the focus of several recent studies related to the Famatinian orogeny; however, the geologic history of arc activity in hinterland areas remains poorly understood. We present new data from the Monte Guazú Complex that reveal arc-related magmatism in the Sierras de Córdoba, which we consider part of the Famatinian hinterland. Igneous rocks comprise a diorite unit which includes an amphibole quartz-gabbro/diorite and a tonalite unit comprising amphibole- and biotite-bearing tonalites to minor granodiorites. Both units constitute a medium-K calc-alkaline series ranging in composition from metaluminous to moderately peraluminous. Trace-element signatures show Ti and Nb depletion and strong incompatible element enrichments (large-ion lithophile elements, Pb, Th, U, and light-rare earth elements) relative to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts, suggesting that they formed in an arc setting. U–Pb zircon geochronology constrains magmatism to 455–498 Ma, while weighted mean ages of 474–489 Ma are mostly synchronous with the Famatinian arc beginning. We demonstrate that fractional crystallization of mantle wedge-derived melts controlled the early magmatic evolution, while country rock assimilation and anatectic melt mixing were prevalent in evolved rock members. These results spatially extend the Late Cambrian–Late Ordovician Famatinian retro-arc to the southern Sierras de Córdoba. Our findings show that magmatism involved coeval anatexis of host rocks, conversely to previous geodynamic models. Our data have fundamental implications for Paleozoic tectonic and magmatic processes operating along the western Argentinian sector of Gondwana, demonstrating the importance of crustal reworking and the addition of mantle material in the Famatinian arc inboard sector. Paleomagnetic records of middle Neoproterozoic (820 to 780 Ma) rocks display high amplitude directional variations that lead to large discrepancies in paleogeographic reconstructions. Hypotheses to explain these data include rapid true polar wander (TPW), a geomagnetic field geometry that deviates from a predominantly axial dipole field, a hyper‐reversing field (>10 reversals/Ma), and/or undiagnosed remagnetization. To test these hypotheses, we collected 1,057 oriented cores over a 85 m stratigraphic succession in the Laoshanya Formation (Yangjiaping, Hunan, China). High precision U‐Pb dating of two intercalated tuff layers constrain the age of the sediments between 809 and 804 Ma. Thermal demagnetization isolates three magnetization components residing in hematite which are not time‐progressive but conflated throughout the section. All samples possess a north and downward directed component in geographic coordinates at temperatures up to 660°C that is ascribed to a Cretaceous overprint. Two components isolated above 660°C reveal distinct directional clusters: one is interpreted as a depositional remanence, while the other appears to be the result of a mid‐Paleozoic (460 to 420 Ma) remagnetization, which is likely widespread throughout South China. The high‐temperature directions are subtly dependent on lithology; microscopic and rock magnetic analyses identify multiple generations of hematite that vary in concentration and distinguish the magnetization components. A comparison with other middle Neoproterozoic paleomagnetic studies in the region indicates that the sudden changes in paleomagnetic directions, used elsewhere to support the rapid TPW hypothesis (ca. 805 Ma), are better explained by mixtures of primary and remagnetized components, and/or vertical axis rotations. Plain Language Summary: Paleomagnetic directions recorded in 820 to 780 million year old rocks from South China exhibit large amplitude changes that vary rapidly, which have been interpreted to indicate extraordinarily fast motion of Earth's crust and mantle, up to 90° within a 5 million year span, with respect to the spin axis of the core. This hypothetical phenomenon, called rapid true polar wander (TPW), could be responsible for dramatic global environmental change at that time. To test this theory, we collected over 1,000 samples from a well exposed section where the incongruous directions are found. Our measurements suggest that some of the rocks acquired a new magnetic signal during a pervasive remagnetization event in South China around 440 million years ago, long after original deposition of the rocks. New hematite growth has a demagnetization spectrum that partially overlaps or completely obscures the original magnetic signal, which was previously unrecognized. This implies that rapid TPW is likely an artifact of magnetic overprinting in ancient rocks from South China. Our results suggest that South China was in a relatively stable position at high latitudes 809 to 804 million years ago. We find no evidence to support exceptionally fast continental drift or an abnormal geomagnetic field geometry during that time. Hydrogen may be incorporated into nominally anhydrous minerals including bridgmanite and post‐perovskite as defects, making the Earth's deep mantle a potentially significant water reservoir. The diffusion of hydrogen and its contribution to the electrical conductivity in the lower mantle are rarely explored and remain largely unconstrained. Here we calculate hydrogen diffusivity in hydrous bridgmanite and post‐perovskite, using molecular dynamics simulations driven by machine learning potentials of ab initio quality. Our findings reveal that hydrogen diffusivity significantly increases with increasing temperature and decreasing pressure, and is considerably sensitive to hydrogen incorporation mechanism. Among the four defect mechanisms examined, (Mg + 2H)Si and (Al + H)Si show similar patterns and yield the highest hydrogen diffusivity. Hydrogen diffusion is generally faster in post‐perovskite than in bridgmanite, and these two phases exhibit distinct diffusion anisotropies. Overall, hydrogen diffusion is slow on geological time scales and may result in heterogeneous water distribution in the lower mantle. Additionally, the proton conductivity of bridgmanite for (Mg + 2H)Si and (Al + H)Si defects aligns with the same order of magnitude of lower mantle conductivity, suggesting that the water distribution in the lower mantle may be inferred by examining the heterogeneity of electrical conductivity. However, the mobility of hydrogen in the lower mantle remains poorly understood. By using advanced machine learning‐driven simulations, we find that hydrogen in lower‐mantle silicates diffuses faster at higher temperatures and lower pressures, and how hydrogen is incorporated into the silicates greatly influences this mobility. Two specific ways of hydrogen incorporation were found to allow hydrogen to move very efficiently. On a geological scale, the transport of hydrogen is slow, suggesting that water may be unevenly distributed in the Earth's lower mantle. The electrical conductivity associated with the movement of hydrogen aligns with previous observations of the Earth's mantle. The Shuangwang Au deposit (with a gold resource of approximately 70 t Au), is located in the Fenxian-Taibai fore-arc basin in the West Qinling Orogen of central China. Igneous intrusions in the region include the Xiba granitic pluton and granite porphyry and lamprophyre dykes. The Xiba pluton is composed of granodiorite and monzonite granite. The granodiorite is typical I-type granite, and it yields a crystallization age of 221.1 ± 1.2 Ma and a two-stage Hf model age of 1432–1634 Ma. The monzonite granite shows a transitional characteristic between I-type and A-type granite, and it yields a crystallization age of 214.8 ± 1.2 Ma and a two-stage Hf model age of 1443–1549 Ma. The granitoid was derived mainly from a crust–mantle mixed source. The ages indicate that the granodiorite and monzonite granite formed during two different stages. The REE distribution patterns of the Xiba granitoid exhibit significant fractionation between LREE and HREE, showing right-dipping curves, with an enrichment of LREE and a deficit of HREE. The granodiorite displays a light negative Eu anomaly, while the monzonite granite displays an obvious negative Eu anomaly. The granite porphyry dikes are distributed in the No. I breccia and Jiupinggou granite porphyry, and they yield crystallization ages of 219.9 ± 1.5 Ma and 213.1 ± 0.89 Ma, respectively, and two-stage Hf model ages of 1382–1501 Ma and 1373–1522 Ma, respectively. The lamprophyre dikes in the deposit yield a crystallization age of 214.4 ± 2.7 Ma. After the collision event between the Yangtze and the North China Plates along the Qinling orogenic belt, at approximately 220 Ma in the Late Triassic, the detachment of the slab produced the upwelling of the asthenosphere material. Under conditions of mantle heat and tectonic stress, widespread partial melting of the subducted continental crust and the upper lithosphere mantle occurred, forming granitoids with various degrees of adakite characteristics. Elevation gradients provide a wealth of habitats for a wide variety of organisms. The southern Appalachian Mountains in eastern United States are known for their high biodiversity and rates of endemism in arthropods, including in high-elevation leaf-litter taxa that are often found nowhere else on earth. Trechus Clairville (Coleoptera: Carabidae) is a genus of litter inhabitants with a near-global distribution and over 50 Appalachian species. These span two subgenera, Trechus s. str. and Microtrechus Jeannel, largely restricted to north and south of the Asheville basin, respectively. Understanding the diversification of these 3–5 mm flightless beetles through geological time can provide insights into how the litter-arthropod community has responded to historical environments, and how they may react to current and future climate change. We identified beetles morphologically and sequenced six genes to reconstruct a phylogeny of the Appalachian Trechus. We confirmed the Asheville Basin as a biogeographical barrier with a split between the north and south occurring towards the end of the Pliocene. Finer scale biogeography, including mountain-range occupancy, was not a reliable indication of relatedness, with group ranges overlapping and many instances of species-, species group-, and subgeneric sympatry. This may be because of the recent divergence between modern species and species groups. Extensive taxonomic revision of the group is required for Trechus to be useful as a bioindicator, but their high population density and speciose nature make them worth additional time and resources. Subduction zone magmatism is a major control of volcanism, the generation of modern continental crust and the formation of economically important porphyry Cu–(Mo–Au) deposits. Reading the magmatic record of individual arc segments and constraining the rates of magmatic changes are critical in order to fully understand and quantify the processes that drive magma evolution in subduction settings during arc growth. This study focuses on the San Francisco Batholith and the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry deposit cluster in central Chile, which provides an igneous rock record over ~13.5 Myr of arc evolution. We use whole-rock geochemistry, zircon geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry to track changes in the crustal magmatic system of this arc segment during crustal thickening and porphyry Cu deposit formation. By combining the analytical dataset with Monte Carlo fractional crystallisation and assimilation fractional crystallisation modelling, we test a model for significant crustal involvement during magma evolution. Systematic and continuous increases in Dy/Yb, La/Yb, V/Sc and Sr/Y in the magmas over time indicate a transition in the main fractionation assemblage from plagioclase-dominated to amphibole-dominated that reflects deeper crystallisation and/or a higher meltwater content. Concomitant decreases in εHf and Th/La as well as increasing Ba/Th are best explained by assimilation of progressively deeper crustal lithologies from low (Chilenia) to high Ba/Th (Cuyania) basement terranes. Our study highlights that an increasingly hydrous magma and a deepening locus of crustal magma differentiation and assimilation, driven by crustal thickening contemporaneous with increased tectonic convergence and ingression of the aseismic Juan Fernandez ridge, can account for all investigated aspects of the multi-Myr magmatic evolution leading up to the formation of the Rio Blanco-Los Bronces porphyry Cu deposits. Our findings corroborate the importance of high-pressure differentiation of hydrous magma for the formation of Andean-style porphyry deposits. Once magmas favourable for porphyry Cu mineralisation were generated in the lower crust, multiple episodes of efficient magma migration into the upper crust fed several, discrete, shallow magmatic-hydrothermal systems over ~3.5 Myr to form the world's largest known Cu resource at Rio Blanco-Los Bronces. The Triassic granitoids in Central Tianshan play a key role in determining the petrogenesis and tectonic evolution on the southern margin of the Central Asian orogenic belt. In this study, we present SHRIMP zircon U‐Pb ages, Hf isotopic and geochemical data on the Xingxingxia biotite granite, amazonite granite and granitic pegmatite in Central Tianshan, NW China. Zircon U‐Pb dating yielded formation ages of 242 Ma for the biotite granite and 240 Ma for the amazonite granite. These granitoid rocks have high K2O with low MgO and CaO contents. They are enriched in Nb, Ta, Hf and Y, while being depleted in Ba and Sr, showing flat HREE patterns and negative Eu anomalies. They have typical A‐type granite geochemical signatures with high Ga/Al (8–13) and TFeO/(TFeO + MgO) ratios, showing an A2 affinity for biotite granite and an A1 affinity for amazonite granite and granitic pegmatite. Zircon εHf(t) values of the granitoids are 0.45–2.66, with Hf model ages of 0.99–1.17 Ga. This suggests that these A‐type granites originated from partial melting of the lower crust. We propose that Xingxingxia Triassic A‐type granites formed under lithospheric extension from post‐orogenic to anorogenic intraplate settings and NE‐trending regional strike‐slip fault‐controlled magma emplacement in the upper crust. The Weining Beishan area of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is located at on the western edge of the Helanshan tectonic belt, which is a tectonic joint among Alxa Block, Ordos Block, and North Qilian orogenic belt. However, the tectonic evolution of this area remains unclear due to the lack of magmatic information. This paper conducted researches on geochronology, geochemistry, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes of the diorite porphyrites exposed in the Weining Beishan area. The zircon U-Pb dating yields two ages of 145.0 ± 1.1 and 146.2 ± 1.5 Ma, and the whole-rock geochemical data indicate that the diorite porphyrites are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous and high-K calc-alkaline series. The characteristics of highly initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.708 16 to 0.710 47), negative εNd(t) (−8.9 to −8.4), and negative εHf(t) (−13.8 to −21.2) indicate that the diorite porphyrites originated from partial melting of the middle-lower ancient crust related to the North China Craton. Combined with the regional geology, we suggested that partial melting was triggered by a tectonic activity of deep faults cutting through the crust under the regional stress transformation from compressing to extension during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, which is probably related to the westward subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. The origins and primary relationships between tectono-stratigraphic units are fundamental to the terrane concept in accretionary orogens, but they are challenging to assess in metamorphic terranes. In NW British Columbia, three tectonically bounded metamorphic suites of the Yukon-Tanana terrane formed in distinct tectonic settings, based on high-spatial-resolution geochronology and immobile trace-element geochemistry. The Florence Range suite comprises late Neoproterozoic or younger to pre-latest Devonian metasedimentary rocks derived from continental crust, 360 ± 4 Ma calc-alkaline intermediate orthogneiss, and 357 ± 4 Ma amphibolite with oceanic-island basalt composition, consistent with rifting of a continental margin. The detrital signature is dominated by late Mesoproterozoic zircon, which indicates different sources than other parts of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The Boundary Ranges suite comprises pre-Late Devonian metasedimentary rocks derived in part from a mafic source, amphibolite derived from subduction-zone metasomatized mantle, and 369 ± 4 Ma to 367 ± 7 Ma calc-alkaline felsic to intermediate orthogneiss. The Whitewater suite comprises meta-chert, graphite-rich metapelite, and amphibolite with back-arc basin basalt composition consistent with an anoxic basin near a volcanic source. Our data indicate that the Florence Range and Boundary Ranges suites were separate until at least the Early Mississippian and may have formed a composite terrane since the Permian, whereas the relationship with the Whitewater suite is uncertain. The construction of Earth's largest highland, the Tibetan Plateau, is generally considered to have been generated by the Cenozoic India-Asia collision. However, the extent to which high topography existed prior to the Cenozoic remains unclear. The Hexi Corridor foreland basin of the northern Tibetan Plateau is an ideal region in which to investigate this history, given its widespread exposure of Early Cretaceous sedimentary sequences. In this study, we examined the Early Cretaceous strata in the northern Hexi Corridor to understand the relationships between pre-Cenozoic sedimentation and tectonic deformation and constrain the late Mesozoic tectonic setting of the adjacent Qilian Shan and Alxa blocks bordering the northern Tibetan Plateau. Results of sandstone petrology analyses, paleocurrent observations, and U-Pb geochronology suggest that the oldest Early Cretaceous sediments deposited in the northern Hexi Corridor were sourced from the southern Alxa block during the earliest Cretaceous. By the late Early Cretaceous, Hexi Corridor sediments were sourced from both the southern Alxa block to the north and the Qilian Shan to the south. Sandstone petrologic results indicate that the northern Hexi Corridor experienced a tectonic transition from contraction to extension during the Early Cretaceous. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau experienced a unique geological evolution during the Jurassic, driven by the termination of the Palaeotethys and the reduction of the Neotethys. The Indian Plate separated from the northern margin of Gondwana and drifted northward from the Southern Hemisphere. Given that the timing of strata serves as the basis for reconstructing geological history, the present work aimed to develop a new multiple stratigraphic and chronologic framework for the Jurassic strata of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau region via a synthesis of the material on lithostratigraphy, palaeontology, iso-radiometric dating, magnetostratigraphy, and other techniques with an emphasis on recent progress and findings. The new framework included the Jurassic System from the four major subdivisions of the plateau: the Baryan Har, Qiangtang, Lhasa-Gandise, and Southern Xizang (Himalaya). Ultimately, a more complete, refined biostratigraphic sequence was proposed, comprising the most common fossils in the plateau and those that are stratigraphically significant for the Jurassic stratigraphy, including ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, foraminifera, radiolarians, and dinoflagellate cysts for the marine strata, and pollen and spores, and charophytes for the terrestrial sediments. This biostratigraphic framework was correlated with the Jurassic international standard zonation of the Geological Time Scale 2020 via standard or representative species or genera of ammonites. Based on this framework, we constructed a lateral correlation of the Jurassic strata between different basins of the plateau. The palaeontologic correlation in the present work shows that the Lhasa-Gandise Block had a closer relationship with the Qiangtang Block than with the Southern Xizang Himalaya during the Jurassic Period. Meanwhile, the Lhasa-Gandise Block and Qiangtang Block shared similar marine fauna features of the north marginal East Tethys. This contrasts the opinion suggesting that the Yarlung Zangbo Tethys was a small back-arc basin. A combination of stratigraphical, palaeontological, and sedimentological analyses implies that the Bangong Co-Nujiang Tethys may have begun rifting in the Late Triassic, evolving to the birth at the late Early Jurassic with the formation of ocean crust. However, this resulted in failure after it grew into the climax at the end of the Middle Jurassic when the Qiangtang Block began subducting under the Lhasa-Gandise Block. During the Late Palaeozoic to Early Mesozoic, the eastern segment of the Palaeo–Tethys Ocean closed, resulting in the collision and amalgamation of the South and North Hainan Islands. However, the exact location of the collision and amalgamation remains controversial. The main collision locations are the Baisha, Jiusuo–Lingshui and Changjiang–Qionghai faults. The U–Pb age of detrital zircons was used to determine the main source area of the Middle Triassic basin in the eastern part of Hainan Island and the closed position of the eastern section of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean. The U–Pb dating of detrital zircons revealed that the Middle Triassic Lingwen Formation contains four age groups: 235–258, 335–446, 766–986 and >1000 Ma. Notably, rock masses aged 248–252 Ma that were formed in a post‐orogenic tension setting have been identified in the western region of Hainan Island, whereas no igneous rocks from this period have been discovered in the eastern region. The detrital zircon samples from the Lingwen Formation revealed a peak at 249 ± 2 Ma U–Pb age, which is important evidence indicating that the Changjiang–Qionghai Fault is the product of collision between the southern and northern Hainan terranes. Affected by the bipolar subduction of the eastern segment of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean, the collision and amalgamation of the South and North Hainan terranes occurred, and experienced a post‐collision (extensional) process at ca. 249 ± 2 Ma. The North Qinling Orogenic Belt (NQB) records the pivotal geological information for understanding the Palaeozoic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB). Previous studies mainly focused on the subduction–collision process along the Shangdan suture zone before the Early Devonian. However, as the significant interim period between the Early Palaeozoic and Mesozoic orogeny, the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution of the NQB remains poorly understood. Fortunately, the Carboniferous magmatic rocks discovered this time provide substantial geological evidence for revealing the Late Palaeozoic tectonic history of the Qinling Orogenic Belt. This paper will provide a detailed analysis of zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical characteristics and Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic compositions of Carboniferous rocks. The Carboniferous magmatic rocks are categorized as highly differentiated S‐type granite and monzodiorite, formed at 350 ± 2.4 Ma and 353 ± 5.2 Ma, respectively. The granite shows weak peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.02–1.11) and shoshonite nature. Based on the isotopic composition and trace element characteristics, we propose that the Qinling Group paragneiss is the primary source of the Carboniferous granite. Monzodiorite is characterized by enriched LREEs and LILEs (Ba, K and Pb), depleted HFSEs (Th, Nb, Ta and Ti) and enriched Sr‐Nd isotopic composition. Monzodiorite magma source region consists of continental crustal material and lithospheric metasomatized mantle. Carboniferous magmatic rocks are the product of an extensional tectonic setting, which indicates the NQB tectonic regimes transition from compression to extension during the Carboniferous. Multiple studies have applied zoned garnet geochronology to place temporal constraints on the rates of metamorphism and deformation during orogenesis. We report new high-resolution isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry Sm-Nd isochron ages on concentric growth zones from microstructurally and thermodynamically characterized garnets from the Betic Cordillera, southern Spain. Our ages for the garnet core (13.64 ± 0.31 Ma), mantle (13.41 ± 0.37 Ma), and rim (13.34 ± 0.45 Ma) indicate rapid garnet growth and are consistent with published garnet ages interpreted to reflect high-pressure metamorphism in the region. Thermodynamic analysis indicates garnets grew during subduction at ~1.5-2.0 GPa and 570-600 ℃. The core to rim duration of spiral garnet growth was just a few hundred thousand years. While other zoned garnet studies have shown similar rapid growth in subduction zone settings, this is the first documentation of such rapid growth of a spiral garnet. Combining this garnet growth duration with the magnitude of spiral inclusion trail curvature, we compute a strain rate of ~10-13 s-1, an order of magnitude faster than all previous spiral garnet studies. Many massive sulfide deposits have been discovered in the Upper Paleozoic rift-related volcaniclastic sequence in South China, among which the Yushui copper deposit is the most important due to its high grade. The deposit has been variably attributed as SEDEX (sedimentary exhalative) or MVT (Mississippi valley type). The Yushui copper deposit in Guangdong (South China) contains stratiform bornite-chalcopyrite orebodies (102.1 kt Cu @ 3.5%, 186.6 kt Pb @ 4.29%, 117.6 kt Zn @ 2.91%, and 339 t Ag @ 112 g/t) developed along the contact between Upper Carboniferous dolostone and Lower Carboniferous pebbly quartz sandstone, which indicates a shallow marine deposition environment. The Yushui deposit comprises an upper massive sulfide orebody and a lower stockwork orebody with intense alteration. In this study, we newly identified Carboniferous tuffs and syn-volcanic faults in the footwall, and exhalites in the hanging-wall. Hematite from the Cu ores yielded a U-Pb age of 320 ± 15 Ma (MSWD = 2.1, n = 57), and hydrothermal dolomite yielded a Sm-Nd isochron age of 308.1 ± 4.6 Ma (n = 7; MSWD = 0.94), which constrains the timing of mineralization at Yushui. These ages are coeval with the Carboniferous host rocks. Combining the evidence from the geological features (syn-volcanic faults, volcanic rocks, exhalites) and hematite trace element compositions, we suggest that the Yushui is a shallow marine VMS (volcanogenic massive sulfide) deposit. The Sr-Nd isotope composition of hydrothermal dolomite (εNd ~−12) indicates that the ore-forming materials were originated from the crustal basement. The Yushui copper deposit was likely formed during the Late Carboniferous continental back-arc extension in eastern South China. The regional extension may have caused enhanced heat flow, which promoted fluid convection in the basement rocks. In addition, we suggest that volcanic rocks and disseminated chalcopyrite-pyrite mineralization in the Lower Carboniferous quartz sandstone and exhalites are good indicators for regional VMS prospecting. The Western Gneiss Region (WGR) is a Precambrian basement domain in the Scandinavian Caledonides and one of the world's largest high‐ and ultrahigh‐pressure terranes. The south–central WGR underwent regional eclogite facies metamorphism 415–400 Ma ago when Baltica subducted beneath Laurentia, during the Scandian orogeny. Eclogites in the WGR group into two traditional types: (1) Precambrian mafic intrusions metamorphosed in situ during Scandian continental subduction and (2) eclogites, garnet peridotites and garnet pyroxenites within ultramafic complexes derived from the subcontinental mantle beneath Laurentia. We document, using field relations, petrography, whole‐rock geochemistry and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon geochronology, a hitherto unrecognized third type of eclogite in the WGR that places new constraints on its tectonic architecture: an eclogitized fragment of oceanic crust from the Iapetus Ocean. The Kråkfjord eclogite complex is a km2‐sized body with an interior consisting of kyanite eclogite (meta‐troctolite) and subordinate layers and lenses of garnet peridotite, garnet websterite and kyanite–garnet leucotonalite. This interior is capped by Fe–Ti‐rich eclogite, which locally contains subordinate pockets of migmatitic aluminous gneiss. The elemental abundances and isotopic compositions of the Fe–Ti‐rich eclogites resemble those of mid‐ocean ridge basalt (MORB). In contrast, the interior kyanite eclogites, peridotites and pyroxenites have compositions similar to the gabbroic cumulates in the lower oceanic crust of slow‐spreading ridges. U–Pb SIMS dating of igneous zircon cores from a leucotonalite pod in the interior of the Kråkfjord complex yields Cambro‐Ordovician igneous ages of 500–440 Ma, with the ~500 Ma age interpreted as the isotopically undisturbed age. This age matches those of Iapetan oceanic rocks exposed elsewhere in the mountain belt. Metamorphic zircon from an Fe–Ti‐rich eclogite in the carapace of the Kråkfjord complex dates the eclogite facies metamorphism at 421.9 ± 2.2 Ma, synchronous with the continental collision. Zircon from a leucosome in Fe–Ti‐rich retro‐eclogite indicates an age of 408.5 ± 2 Ma for the crystallization of partial melt following the decompression. Detrital zircon core ages from a pocket of aluminous migmatitic gneiss in the carapace indicate derivation of sediment from the Baltic crust. Collectively, the data show that the eclogite complex (1) originated at an Iapetus spreading centre near the continent Baltica, (2) subducted to eclogite conditions during Scandian continental collision and (3) was tectonically intercalated with the Precambrian Baltica basement of the WGR. The oldest known evolved (felsic) rocks on Earth (c. 4.03 Ga) are found in the Acasta Gneiss Complex (AGC) in north‐western Canada and represent a fundamental keystone in unravelling the geological processes governing crustal growth and differentiation during the Hadean and early Archean. Although the timing of multiple episodes of magmatism, metamorphism and deformation in these tonalitic gneisses has been investigated extensively, the metamorphic pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions recorded by the rocks are poorly constrained. Here, we use phase equilibrium modelling coupled with in situ garnet Lu–Hf geochronology and trace element analysis for two garnet‐bearing tonalitic gneisses to decipher the metamorphic history of the AGC. The observed mineral assemblages are consistent with peak metamorphic conditions of T = 725–780°C and P = 4.5–6.2 kbar and the generation of a small amount of melt (<7 vol.%). Garnet geochronology constrains the age of metamorphism to 3.3–3.2 Ga, consistent with previous evidence for a late Paleoarchean tectono‐metamorphic event in the AGC. Subsequent isotopic disturbance of garnet at c. 1.9 Ga is interpreted to correspond to a modification of the primary Lu–Hf systematics in response to garnet resorption/recrystallization during the Paleoproterozoic Wopmay orogeny, resulting in significant scatter between these two age components. Our study adds to the small number of published P–T data for metamorphic rocks older than 2.8 Ga and shows that tonalitic gneisses in the AGC record a high apparent thermal gradient of ~140°C/kbar in the late Paleoarchean. This thermal gradient is the highest among the limited dataset, but is broadly similar to data from other Paleoarchean‐Mesoarchean crustal rocks in recording high T/P ratios (>77.5°C/kbar). Competing hypotheses attribute the regional loss of 1.2–1.0 Ga detrital zircon from the Cambrian Sauk Sequence in southwestern North America to differing tectonic controls on surface topography. We test three hypotheses with source‐to‐sink detrital zircon provenance analysis via tandem in situ and isotope dilution U–Pb geochronology paired with geochemical and Hf‐isotope tracers. Our data indicate that the lower‐to‐middle Sixtymile Formation in Grand Canyon was derived from ca. 1.1 Ga rocks of the Llano Uplift and the ca. 539–523 Ma Wichita igneous province, approximately 1400 km away. In contrast, new U–Pb geochronology links the upper Sixtymile and Tapeats formations to the 513–510 Ma Florida Mountains intrusive complex, southern New Mexico, and proximal 1.4 and 1.7 Ga basement approximately 650 km away. We attribute a regional provenance shift to plume–lithosphere interactions on the Iapetan margin, tectonism along 'leaky' intracratonic transverse fault zones and the rift‐to‐drift transition on the Cordilleran margin. Vertebrate‐mediated seed dispersal is a common attribute of many living plants, and variation in the size and abundance of fleshy diaspores is influenced by regional climate and by the nature of vertebrate seed dispersers among present‐day floras. However, potential drivers of large‐scale variation in the abundance and size distributions of fleshy diaspores through geological time, and the importance of geographic variation, are incompletely known. This knowledge gap is important because fleshy diaspores are a key mechanism of energy transfer from photosynthesis to animals and may in part explain the diversification of major groups within birds and mammals. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain variation in the abundance and size distribution of fleshy diaspores through time, including plant–frugivore co‐evolution, angiosperm diversification, and changes in vegetational structure and climate. We present a new data set of more than 800 georeferenced fossil diaspore occurrences spanning the Triassic–Oligocene, across low to mid‐ to high palaeolatitudes. We use this to quantify patterns of long‐term change in fleshy diaspores, examining the timing and geographical context of important shifts as a test of the potential evolutionary and climatic explanations. We find that the fleshy fruit sizes of angiosperms increased for much of the Cretaceous, during the early diversification of angiosperms from herbaceous ancestors with small fruits. Nevertheless, this did not cause a substantial net change in the fleshy diaspore size distributions across seed plants, because gymnosperms had achieved a similar size distribution by at least the Late Triassic. Furthermore, gymnosperm‐dominated Mesozoic ecosystems were mostly open, and harboured low proportions of specialised frugivores until the latest Cretaceous, suggesting that changes in vegetation structure and plant–frugivore co‐evolution were probably not important drivers of fleshy diaspore size distributions over long timescales. Instead, fleshy diaspore size distributions may be largely constrained by physical or life‐history limits that are shared among groups and diversify as a plant group expands into different growth forms/sizes, habitats, and climate regimes. Mesozoic gymnosperm floras had a low abundance of fleshy diaspores (<50% fleshy diaspore taxa), that was surpassed by some low‐latitude angiosperm floras in the Cretaceous. Eocene angiosperm floras show a mid‐ to high latitude peak in fleshy fruit abundance, with very high proportions of fleshy fruits that even exceed those seen at low latitudes both in the Eocene and today. Mid‐ to high latitude proportions of fleshy fruits declined substantially over the Eocene–Oligocene transition, resulting in a shift to more modern‐like geographic distributions with the highest proportion of fleshy fruits occurring in low‐latitude tropical assemblages. This shift was coincident with global cooling and the onset of Southern Hemisphere glaciation, suggesting that rapid cooling at mid‐ and high latitudes caused a decrease in availability of the climate conditions most favourable for fleshy fruits in angiosperms. Future research could be focused on examining the environmental niches of modern fleshy fruits, and the potential effects of climate change on fleshy fruit and frugivore diversity. Relic coastal landforms (fossil corals, cemented intertidal deposits, or erosive features carved onto rock coasts) serve as sea‐level index points (SLIPs), that are widely used to reconstruct past sea‐level changes. Traditional SLIP‐based sea‐level reconstructions face challenges in capturing continuous sea‐level variability and dating erosional SLIPs, such as tidal notches. Here, we propose a novel approach to such challenges. We use a numerical model of cliff erosion embedded within a Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the most likely sea‐level scenarios responsible for shaping one of the best‐preserved tidal notches of Last Interglacial age in Sardinia, Italy. Results align with Glacial Isostatic Adjustment model predictions, indicating that synchronized or out‐of‐sync ice‐volume shifts in Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets can reproduce the notch morphology, with sea level confidently peaking at 6 m and only under a higher than present erosion regime. This new approach yields insight into sea‐level trends during the Last Interglacial. Plain Language Summary: Scientists typically investigate the position of sea level in geological time using the elevation, age, and characteristics of fossil marine organisms living in shallow water (e.g., coral reefs), beach deposits, or erosional features that were formed near the sea level. However, these indicators offer only fragmented, if not only point‐like information in time and not a continuous sea‐level record. To overcome this issue, we use a numerical model that reconstructs the shape of tidal notches (i.e., indentations created close to sea level in carbonate cliffs). We compare model‐generated notch shapes with the real shape of the tidal notch, and we produce a set of continuous sea‐level histories that are more likely to have produced one of the best‐preserved fossil tidal notches in the Orosei Gulf, Sardinia, Italy, carved during the Last Interglacial highstand, 125.000 years ago. Our findings suggest that whether the ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland melted at the same time or separately, both scenarios could reproduce the actual shape of the tidal notch we observe at present. Our findings indicate that the erosion rate during that period was higher than present and the sea level is very likely to have reached up to 6 m. The February 2023 Turkey‐Syria Earthquake doublet ruptured multiple segments of the East Anatolian Fault (EAF) Zone. Dominating seismicity focal mechanism shifted dramatically from strike‐slip to normal‐faulting after the doublet. To better understand this shift, here we derived a comprehensive 3D co‐seismic displacement field and performed the stress analysis. Abundant space geodetic data were used to generate high‐resolution 3D surface displacement, which provide tight constraints on fault geometry, slip distribution and stress field. Together with stress inversion from aftershock focal mechanisms, we show that the principal stress direction rotation in the region with the most normal‐faulting aftershocks is the staggering 29°. The induced heterogenous stress may explain the shift of the dominant focal mechanism toward normal faulting. We suggest that the extensional horsetail splay faults, likely formed through geologic time scale related to the releasing bend on the EAF, are the hosts of most of the normal faulting aftershocks. A remarkable feature for the 2023 Turkey‐Syria Mw7.8 & 7.7 earthquake doublet is that, background seismicity shifted dramatically from strike‐slip to normal type of faulting after the doublet. To unravel the physical process resulted in this feature, we use space geodetic measurements to derive the surface displacements and stress field associated with the doublet. The derived stress field shows a staggering 29° rotation occurred in a horsetail splay fault structure where many normal‐faulting earthquakes happened. The large stress rotation indicates the doublet released considerable stress and may result in a heterogeneous stress field due to the stress change. The combination of the identified horsetail structure and stress rotation can help better explain the occurrence of pervasive normal‐faulting earthquakes. Biogeochemical reactions modulate the chemical composition of the oceans and atmosphere, providing feedbacks that sustain planetary habitability over geological time. Here, we mathematically evaluate a suite of biogeochemical processes to identify combinations of reactions that stabilize atmospheric carbon dioxide by balancing fluxes of chemical species among the ocean, atmosphere, and geosphere. Unlike prior modeling efforts, this approach does not prescribe functional relationships between the rates of biogeochemical processes and environmental conditions. Our agnostic framework generates three types of stable reaction combinations: closed sets, where sources and sinks mutually cancel for all chemical reservoirs; exchange sets, where constant ocean-atmosphere conditions are maintained through the growth or destruction of crustal reservoirs; and open sets, where balance in alkalinity and carbon fluxes is accommodated by changes in other chemical components of seawater or the atmosphere. These three modes of operation have different characteristic timescales and may leave distinct evidence in the rock record. To provide a practical example of this theoretical framework, we applied the model to recast existing hypotheses for Cenozoic climate change based on feedbacks or shared forcing mechanisms. Permian mafic dikes crop out widely within Beishan area in the southernmost Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). These mantle-derived products provide important clues for elucidating the genesis and geodynamic setting of Permian magmatism. The mafic dikes within the Beishan area display zircons U–Pb ages of 281 ± 4 Ma. Characterized by low SiO2 (44.88–47.73 wt.%) and high Mg# values (62.2–68.6), the type 1 dikes are relatively depleted in light rare earth elements (LREEs; (La/Yb)n = 0.72–1.43) but enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs). They show high positive εNd(t) values (6.6–8.5) with a range of (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.703477–0.705789) ratios. In contrast, the type 2 dikes have higher SiO2 content (47.47–51.13 wt.%) and lower Mg# (40.9–63.0). They are enriched in LREEs ((La/Yb)n = 1.79–5.02) and LILEs, and have lower εNd(t) values (3.8–7.4) with a variable range of (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.702873–0.706949) ratios. Thus, the type 1 dikes resulted from lower degrees of fractional crystallization and contamination than the type 2 dikes. Considering the LILEs and Pb enrichments, high field strength elements depletions, and high Ba/Th (86–460) ratios, the mantle source was metasomatized by subduction-related fluids. These dikes should be derived from high degrees (>20%) of partial melting of a Sr–Nd isotope-depleted, phlogopite-bearing spinel lherzolite lithospheric mantle according to their high Rb/Sr (0.04–0.24), low Ba/Rb (0.9–3.3), low La/Sm, and constant Sm/Yb ratios in addition to Sr–Nd depletion. Combined with the coeval evidence of regional geology and novel tectonic discriminate diagrams, we suggest that the mafic dikes in Beishan area formed in arc-related setting rather than intracontinental setting during the Permian. The metasomatized lithospheric mantle by subduction-related fluids were heated by upwelling asthenosphere mantle triggered by the slab roll-back, resulting in the formation of the parental magma of the mafic dikes. Detrital zircon (DZ) geochronology is based on a multistage, hierarchical sampling process in which sampling errors (statistical variance) and non-sampling errors (sampling bias) are endemic. Most of these errors are related to 1) initial collection of a non-random grab sample (typically from outcrop); 2) processing the grab sample to obtain a non-random grain-size sample of restricted grain size(s) (effectively a processed population); 3) randomly and/or non-randomly selecting DZs (often based on their size, shape, and colour) from the grain-size sample to obtain a hand-picked sample (effectively an analysed population); and 4) randomly and/or non-randomly radiometrically dating only certain DZs (due to limitations of instrument spot size and grain imperfections) from the hand-picked sample to obtain an analysed sample. Claims that hand-picked samples and analysed samples are randomly chosen are questionable, since these samples likely represent haphazard sampling attempting to emulate randomness. Non-randomness has major implications for calculations that determine sample size and inter-sample 'sameness' comparison, as both techniques generally depend on randomly chosen samples. The use of inter-sample comparison is particularly troublesome in that sameness is determined for the analysed sample, which is not representative of the initial grab sample. Yet more bias occurs with a 'leap of inference', the generalization of DZ ages from the analysed sample to the target population (the strata of interest) or to a general population (DZs derived from ultimate and proximate sources). Sampling bias can be reduced by unambiguously defining the sampled population (the population that inferential statistics apply), selecting representative samples (if possible, randomization should be used at every stage in the sampling process), and preserving the representativeness of subsamples by using correct sampling devices such as a microsplitter. It may be timely for standardized sampling, interpreting, and reporting guidelines so that detrital geochronology data are scientifically meaningful and replicable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combined zircon U-Pb, garnet-based mineral-whole-rock Sm-Nd, and hornblende/biotite 40Ar/39Ar geochronological study was conducted on polymetamorphic granulite-facies rocks from the Prydz Belt and adjacent Vestfold Block in East Antarctica. Zircon U-Pb data and zircon-garnet rare earth element distributions indicate that granulite-facies mineral assemblages of the Meknattane Nunataks-Hamm Peak area and the Reinbolt Hills in the Prydz Belt were formed at ca. 1000-900 Ma. Some Grenvilleaged (i.e., late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic) zircons underwent partial U-Pb resetting, without new growth, during Pan-African-aged (i.e., late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian) metamorphism. Mineral-wholerock Sm-Nd dating yielded isochron ages of 865-672 Ma for the Meknattane Nunataks-Hamm Peak area, 504-483 Ma for the Reinbolt Hills, and 670-589 Ma for the Vestfold Hills. These results suggest that Pan-Africanaged reworking was inhomogeneous, leading to either partial or complete resetting of the garnet Sm-Nd isotopic system in different areas. Apparently, Sm-Nd ages might have geological meaning only when the isotopic system of garnet (including other contemporaneous minerals) has been completely reset. In this regard, garnet-based Sm-Nd geochronology is less robust when applied to polymetamorphic granulite terranes. Hornblende 40Ar/39Ar dating produced an older age of 526 Ma for the Vestfold Hills, whereas biotite 40Ar/39Ar ages showed slight differences among the studied areas, with ages of 514-497 Ma for the Meknattane Nunataks-Hamm Peak area, 482-467 Ma for the Reinbolt Hills, and 520-509 Ma for the Vestfold Hills. These age patterns imply that 40Ar/39Ar dating of minerals can constrain the cooling time of the latest metamorphic event only, and cooling times to the Ar closure temperature of biotite differ among different parts of the Prydz Belt. Integration of the new results with available Sm-Nd and 40Ar/39Ar data indicates that the Prydz Belt underwent rapid tectonic uplift and cooling from lower to mid- and upper-crustal depths during postorogenic evolution. The Vestfold Block might have been located at the margin of the high-temperature Prydz Belt and underwent relatively low-temperature reworking and earlier cooling during the Pan-African-aged orogeny. The Lancang metamorphic complex is a key component of the Three River Tethys Orogen in the SE Tibetan Plateau, with typical rock assemblages and deformation fabrics recording the subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and subsequent continental collision. In this study, we present new petrographic and structural observations, together with zircon U-Pb and mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic data, to reveal the deformation and kinematics of the Lancang metamorphic complex, thus providing insights into the Permian-Triassic evolution of the eastern Paleo-Tethys domain. The subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and subsequent collision resulted in a range of structural features, including penetrative regional foliations, thrusts, asymmetric folds at various scales, and ductile deformation fabrics such as asymmetric boudins and porphyroclasts. Zircon U-Pb dating of foliated gabbro and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mica schist and mylonite, which preserve shortening fabrics, suggest that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean was subducted during the Late Carboniferous to Permian-Early Triassic, and the collision of the Baoshan and Simao blocks mainly occurred during ca. 237-230 Ma in the SE Tibetan Plateau. Regional deformation likely shifted from shortening to extension ca. 230 Ma, as reflected by post-collision high-K calc-alkaline magmatism. Terrestrial strata of the Judith River-Belly River wedge, widely exposed in the plains of north-central Montana, southern Alberta, and southwestern Saskatchewan, were pivotal in early stratigraphic investigations of the Western Interior of North America and are renowned to this day for their spectacular preservation of Late Cretaceous fossils, most notably dinosaurs. Correlation of the Judith River Formation in Montana with the Foremost, Oldman, and Dinosaur Park Formations (= Belly River Group) in Canada has been challenging for a variety of reasons, including lithostratigraphic complexities, legacy bentonite ages of limited comparability, and distinctly different stratigraphic models on opposite sides of the international border. An updated model calibrated with U-Pb zircon ages provides an improved framework for stratigraphic analysis. New geochronology indicates that the Oldman-Dinosaur Park discontinuity in Dinosaur Provincial Park correlates in age with the mid-Judith discontinuity in the Judith River Formation in Montana, which is interpreted as an expansion surface linked to a major pulse of accommodation and onset of the Bearpaw transgression at ca. 76.3 Ma. The regionally expressed shift in alluvial facies marking the mid-Judith discontinuity can be traced in well logs from Montana to southern Canada, where it loses distinction and transitions to a subsurface signature typical of the Oldman-Dinosaur Park discontinuity, which in turn can be traced north to Dinosaur Provincial Park and beyond. Across this expanse, both discontinuities parallel the Eagle/Milk River shoulder at approximately the same stratigraphic height, confirming their chronostratigraphic significance. These findings have clear implications for regional correlation and the evolution of alluvial depositional systems in a foreland basin setting, and they afford an opportunity to evaluate existing interpretations and advance understanding of the stratigraphy and paleontology of the Judith River-Belly River wedge. The term "Judith River-Belly River discontinuity" should be used henceforth to refer to the chronostratigraphically significant stratal discontinuity that subdivides the Judith River-Belly River wedge throughout the plains of north-central Montana, southern Alberta, and southwestern Saskatchewan. The Ulgen porphyry Mo deposit, recently discovered in the northeastern segment of the Derbugan metallogenic belt, NE China, is a large and hidden ore deposit. Investigation of this deposit provides insights into the geodynamic background and metallogenic mechanism of Mesozoic porphyry Mo deposits that are exposed elsewhere in NE China. The host rocks consist of muscovite monzonitic granite (MMG) and biotite granitic porphyry (BGP), which are intruded into Lower and/or Middle Jurassic intermediate-felsic volcanic-sedimentary rocks and pre-ore monzogranitic porphyry (MP). Zircon laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb age dating indicates that the MMG and BGP were emplaced at 144.9 Ma and 144.7 Ma, ca. 14 m.y. younger than the intrusion age of MP (159.3 Ma). Molybdenite Re-Os isotopic dating indicates that Mo mineralization occurred at 144.9 Ma, almost simultaneously with the 145 Ma magmatic activity. Geochemically, all of the Ulgen granitoids are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Th, U, and K) and light rare earth elements, and are depleted in high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti). The pre-ore MPs belong to I-type granites with moderately negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.62-0.65), whereas the syn-ore MMGs exhibit S-type affinity with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.29-0.39). The ore-forming BGPs display adakite-like geochemical features in terms of high-Sr, low-Y, and low-Yb contents, and slightly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.72-0.74). All intrusive rocks have relatively low initial (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios (0.7044-0.7055) and positive εNd(t) values (+1.15 to +2.65), positive εHf(t) values (+4.0 to +9.4), young two-stage Nd and Hf model ages (tDM2(Nd) = 841-731 Ma, tDM2(Hf) = 943-604 Ma), and moderate (206Pb/204Pb)i (18.300-18.402), (207Pb/204Pb)i (15.557-15.564), and (208Pb/204Pb)i (38.180-38.307) ratios. Therefore, it is most likely that these intrusive rocks originated from a mixture of two sources of magma derived from the mantle and juvenile lower crust, in which there were variable degrees of the fractional crystallization of ilmenite, apatite, and plagioclase. Rather than the partial melting of oceanic slabs, the fractional crystallization of hornblende and accessory minerals (e.g., ilmenite and apatite) induces the adakitic geochemical signature of BGPs. Compared with the BGPs, the MPs had a relatively deeper magma source region, whereas the MMGs had a relatively shallower magma source region. The BGPs and the Mo-bearing fluids of the Ulgen deposit were most probably derived simultaneously from magma that was generated at an extensional setting following the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean during the latest Jurassic. The eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in NE China is one of the world's well-known Ag-Pb-Zn-Mo metallogenic provinces, and the late Mesozoic magmas have been considered to supply dominant metals for mineralization. However, Cu mineralization in this belt is relatively rare. The Zhalageamu deposit is a newly discovered copper deposit in this region and could be applied to address the issue of whether the regional late Mesozoic magmatism could have triggered the formation of large Cu deposits. The quartz diorite and granite porphyry in Zhalageamu returned laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb ages of 267.1 ± 2.0 Ma and 255.6 ± 2.2 Ma, respectively. Molybdenite coexisting with chalcopyrite yielded an isotope dilution-negative-thermal ionization mass spectrometric Re-Os age of 141.8 ± 0.8 Ma. This age is almost identical to that of the coexisting arsenopyrite within the analytical uncertainty, which yielded an Re-Os isochron age of 140.7 ± 5.9 Ma. The above ages constrain the timing of Cu mineralization to the late Mesozoic. The fact that the Cu mineralization is >110 m.y. younger than its igneous host rocks precludes a genetic link between them. Instead, the Cu mineralization age indicates that a possible hidden late Mesozoic intrusion likely contributed Cu mineralization. The age of the Zhalageamu deposit is similar to that of the late Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Ag-Pb-Zn-Fe-Sn mineralizing event (140-120 Ma) in NE China. This suggests that the Zhalageamu Cu mineralization was part of this event and implies the broader existence of a late Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Cu mineralizing event in NE China, a discovery that would be of great significance for further Cu exploration. Rock fracturing sets the pace for a range of geomorphic processes. While experimental studies and modeling have provided invaluable insights into the mechanisms and rates of rock fracturing as a function of stress, time, and environmental conditions, fieldbased observations of subaerial fracturing evolution over geologic time are scarce. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic study of fractures that developed subaerially and in situ within clasts perched on abandoned late Quaternary alluvial surfaces (ca. 0, ca. 14, and ca. 62 ka in age) in the hyperarid Dead Sea Rift Valley, Israel. Using quantitative field observations, petrographic, and scanning electron microscopy, and micron-scale laser scans of fracture surfaces we found that fractures exhibit a consistent pattern of three distinctive weathering zones: (1) an "Outer Zone," where fracture surface morphology resembles the clast exterior; (2) an "Accumulation Zone," where fractures are infilled by "loose" accumulated particles; and (3) an "Inner Zone" where fractures extend inward to the crack-tip and preferentially follow grain boundaries. Crack-tips are characterized as a distinct micro domain that consists of fracture-parallel microcracks, chemical alteration, and dissolution morphologies. Altogether, the laboratory results indicate chemically enhanced fracturing and infiltration of water ahead of traction-free, open crack-tips. Field measurements also revealed an increase in fracture number density over geologic time. Our results highlight new details regarding the progressive nature of mechanical weathering through geologic time and the role of moisture as a potential rate-setting factor in the fracturing that allows mechanical weathering. In the late Permian and Triassic, the continental Mitu Group formed in extensional basins along the length of the Cordillera Oriental and Altiplano of present-day Peru. Given the presence of coeval arc systems only in northern Chile and southern Ecuador but not in Peru the tectonic setting of the Mitu basin has been interpreted variably as orthogonal continental rift, sinistral transtensional rift, aulacogen and back-arc basin. The Mitu Group comprises continental mass flow and alluvial fan, fluvial, aeolian and minor lacustrian facies and hosts thick piles of subalkaline and alkaline intermediate and felsic ignimbrites and mafic lavas. The age of the Mitu Group had originally been established as ranging from the Late Permian to the late Triassic on the basis of structural considerations and scarce biostratigraphic data. Recently, U-Pb zircon ages from ignimbrites and sedimentary rocks have been taken to constrain the Mitu Group to the Middle and Late Triassic. We performed a sedimentological, heavy mineral, and zircon geochronological and Lu-Hf isotope study of the Mitu Group in 14 sections mainly in southern and central Peru, and one section in northern Peru. Ten new U-Pb concordia ages on ignimbrites intercalated in the Mitu Group successions offer a new robust stratigraphic framework and constrain the stratigraphy of the Mitu Group between 260 and 205 Ma. In combination with maximum likelihood ages of deposition derived from detrital zircon, U-Pb geochronology places the deposition of the Mitu Group between ca. 270 and 194 Ma (lower Guadalupian into the Sinemurian). Detrital zircon U-Pb age distributions and heavy mineral assemblages reflect a strongly recycled Precambrian Amazonian and Palaeozoic proto-Andean provenance. The Palaeozoic detrital age patterns are highly variable, and temporally and spatially random. A local provenance can generally not be identified. εHf(t) values in zircon obtained from ignimbrites and sedimentary rocks indicate variable degrees of crustal recycling. In the course of the Palaeozoic, εHf(t) values become on average progressively less negative, with a large proportion particularly of Mitu age zircons' εHf(t) values encompassing less evolved and moderately juvenile compositions. Along strike of the basin stratigraphic thicknesses, and rates and times of accumulation vary strongly with larger thicknesses and rates being registered in southern Peru. This suggests that the Mitu basin had been divided into a number of subbasins with individual histories of subsidence, accumulation, and volcanism. Absent a magmatic arc, late Permian-Triassic Peru evolved in a sinistral plate tectonic and regional framework expressed particularly in the sinistral Late Gondwanide orogeny predating the Mitu Group. We interpret that a sinistral transform fault linked the subduction zones in southern Ecuador and northern Chile and that the Mitu Group basin has formed by sinistral transtensional and transpressional movements along a related transcurrent fault inboard of the transform margin. In the broader framework of the accretionary Terra Australis orogen along the western Gondwana margin, this interpretation fits its evolution in the Andean segment in an internally consistent way. DINOSTRAT version 2.1-GTS2020 is now available (10.5281/zenodo.10506652, Bijl et al., 2024b). This version updates DINOSTRAT to the Geologic Time Scale 2020, and new publications are added into the database. The resulting database now contains over 9450 entries from 209 sites. This update has not led to major and profound changes in the conclusions made previously. DINOSTRAT allows full presentation of the first and last stratigraphic occurrences of dinoflagellate cyst subfamilies and families, as well as the evolutionary turnover throughout geologic history, as a reliable representation of dinoflagellate evolution. Although the picture of dinoflagellate evolution from DINOSTRAT is broadly consistent with that in previous publications, with DINOSTRAT the underlying data are openly available, reproducible and up to date. Petrographic and thermobarometric data obtained on a blastolite lens hosted in sheared rocks of the Gonzhinskii block indicate that the lens contains four mineral assemblages: relict, main, an assemblage corresponding to biotitization, and that of retrograde alterations. The relict assemblage was likely eclogitic. The main mineral assemblage corresponds to zoisite amphibolite developing after eclogite. The P−T metamorphic parameters of this assemblage are P = 13.0−15.0 kbar and T = 580−670°C. However, if the calculations are done using the iron richest outer rim of amphibole 1, the P−T parameters are P = 13.0−17.0 kbar and T = 660−780°C. The mineral assemblage corresponding to the overprinted biotitization is clearly distinct texturally. The lines of the monomineral equilibria of the biotite assemblage plotted using various combinations of the composition of the garnet, biotite, and plagioclase well converge within a compact field of P = 12.5−13.2 kbar and T = 810−830°C. The latest assemblage of retrograde minerals includes low-Al amphibole 2. Our original Sm−Nd isotope date were used to calculate an isochron for a whole-rock sample, garnet, and two amphiboles. The isochron age of the rock is 171 ± 3 Ma and is interpreted as the age of the main mineral assemblage, i.e., its crystallization at the metamorphic peak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large Dongtangzi Zn-Pb deposit is located in the southwest of the Fengxian–Taibai (abbreviated as Fengtai) ore cluster in the west Qinling orogen. The origin of the deposit is controversial, positing diverse genesis mechanisms such as sedimentary-exhalative (SEDEX), sedimentary-reformed, and epigenetic-hydrothermal types. This study combines systematic ore geology observations with high-precision Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd ages of 211 Ma and in situ S-Pb isotopes to constrain the timing and origin of mineralization. In situ S-Pb isotopic studies show that the sulfide ores display a narrow range of δ34S values from 1.1‰ to 10.2‰, with 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios of 18.07 to 18.27, 15.64 to 15.66, and 38.22 to 38.76, respectively. On the other hand, pyrites of the sedimentary period and the granite porphyry dike have δ34S values ranging from 15.8 to 21.4‰ and from 2.1 to 4.3‰ (with 206Pb/204Pb ratios of 18.09 to 18.10, 207Pb/204Pb ratios of 15.59 to 15.61, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios of 38.17 to 38.24), respectively. The above-mentioned S-Pb isotopic compositions indicate that the metallic materials involved in ore formation originated from a mixture of Triassic magmatic hydrothermal fluid and metamorphic basement. By integrating the regional geology, mineralization ages, and S-Pb isotopic studies, we propose that the Dongtangzi Zn-Pb deposit is the product of epigenetic hydrothermal fluid processes, driven by Late Triassic regional tectono-magmatic processes. Shoshonitic rocks are widely distributed in post-collisional settings and provide key information on deep geodynamic mechanisms and magmatic evolution. In this paper, we present petrographic, zircon U-Pb age-related, trace elemental, Hf isotopic, bulk-rock elemental, and Sr-Nd isotopic data of the Dalongtan shoshonitic syenite porphyries (DSSPs) in central Yunnan, southeastern Tibet. The DSSPs formed at 33.2 ± 0.3 Ma in a post-collisional setting. They define linear trends on Harker diagrams, and they display similar trace element patterns and enriched bulk-rock Sr-Nd isotopes [(87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70964–0.70968, εNd(t) = −12.9 to −12.7] and zircon Hf isotopes (εHf(t) = −15.7 to −13.1) to the coeval mantle-derived potassic mafic rocks. This suggests that the DSSPs were fractionated from the lithospheric mantle-derived mafic magmas. The DSSPs, along with the coeval felsic and mafic magmatic rocks (37.2–32.3 Ma), exhibit a planar distribution on the SE Tibet and predate the left-lateral shearing of the Ailaoshan–Red River shear zone (ARSZ) (32–22 Ma), suggesting that there are no genetic relationships between them. The DSSPs have geochemical characteristics similar to those of A-type granites, with high total alkalinity (10.39–11.17 wt.%), HFSE concentrations (Zr + Nb + Ce + Y = 890.2–1054.3 ppm), Ga/Al ratios (10,000 × Ga/Al = 2.95–3.46), whole-rock zircon saturation temperatures (906–947 °C), and oxygen fugacity (ΔFMQ = +3.30–+4.65), indicating that they are products of the high-temperature melting of the lithosphere as a result of asthenosphere upwelling in extensional settings. Based on our data and regional observations, it is proposed that the generation of the DSSPs may be linked to the convective thinning of the thickened lithospheric mantle following the India–Asia collision. Owing to the paucity of research on synchronous mafic rocks in the Tarim Basin, the late Paleozoic–early Mesozoic tectonic development of this region is not well defined. The Halaqi region is situated on Tarim's northwest edge, and numerous mafic dikes can be found cross-cutting the Permian strata. The whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb age, and Sr–Nd isotopic signature of these mafic rocks have never been reported before, and this contribution can offer geochronological and petrogenetic investigations that provide fresh insight into the geodynamic development of the area. Major oxide contents in the Halaqi mafic rocks vary, including SiO2 (45.74–50.31 wt.%), Al2O3 (13.28–14.8 wt.%), FeOT (16.48–19.19 wt.%), MgO (7.58–10.32 wt.%), CaO (7.19–12.39 wt.%), Na2O (2.97–4.50 wt.%), K2O (0.24–0.63 wt.%), TiO2 (1.11–1.29 wt.%), MnO (0.14–0.16 wt.%), and P2O5 (0.13–0.17 wt.%). The mafic rocks are enriched in high-field-strength elements (e.g., Zr and Hf) and large-ion lithophile elements (e.g., Sr, Th, and U) but depleted in Nb, Ta, and P. The total REEs in the rocks are lower (ΣREE = 72.80–86.85 ppm), and HREEs are somewhat depleted in comparison to LREEs, with positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 1.05–1.17) but weak negative Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.91–0.93). Zircon U–Pb ages of 201–247 Ma were obtained from a total of 18 magmatic zircon grains found in the mafic rocks that were studied. These results point to a middle-to-late Triassic emplacement. The mafic dikes exhibit somewhat enriched Nd isotopic compositions (εNd(t) = –1.6~–0.2) and an older Nd model age (TDM = 1.24–1.37 Ga). The Halaqi middle–late Triassic mafic dikes are thought to have originated from the same tectonic background as the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province, along with similar geochemical and isotopic compositions. This suggests that they are all products of the interaction between asthenospheric and lithospheric mantles in an intraplate extensional environment. Research indicates that the Triassic mafic magmatism in northwest Tarim could be the product of the continuous thermal pulse of the Tarim mantle plume and be a part of the Tarim LIP. Precise determination of the tectonothermal events at the Qinling–Qilian junction is significant for understanding the tectonic evolution of the eastern branch of the Paleo-Tethys. The Banpo pluton outcrops in the northern margin of the North Qinling were chosen as the research subject and their formation and tectonic environment were investigated using zircon U-Pb age and geochemical compositions. The weighted average values of 206Pb/238U ages of samples from three sites of the Banpo pluton corresponded to 213.4 ± 2.1 Ma (MSWD = 0.56), 213.0 ± 1.6 Ma (MSWD = 0.92), and 216.3 ± 2.3 Ma (MSWD = 2.0). All the samples are rich in light rare earth elements, exhibiting a seagull-type right-leaning partitioning curve, with obviously negative Eu anomalies. In addition, based on the regional geological data, it can be concluded that the Banpo pluton was formed during the transition period from a post-Orogenic environment to an anorogenic environment. The results indicated the final stage of the Triassic orogeny and the closure phase of the Paleo-Tethys. Also, it shows closure of the Paleo-Tethys-Mianxian-Lueyang Ocean by the Late Triassic period as well as the completion of the collision between the North China and Yangtze Blocks along the Qinling Orogenic Belt. The Karkonosze-Izera Massif in the West Sudetes preserves evidence of subduction of the Saxothuringian Ocean beneath the Teplá-Barrandian Domain. Within the massif, the Leszczyniec metaigneous complex (LMC) is identified as the upper allochthon. It exhibits a unique structural history in comparison to the underlying allochthons, suggesting that the LMC records a distinctive tectonic history. To investigate the timing of this history, two orthogneisses were studied from a single outcrop of the LMC for in situ white mica Rb/Sr geochronology. The outcrop bears a southeast-dipping foliation (S1) and a north/northeast plunging stretching lineation (L1), defined by white mica and quartz. Quartz recrystallization textures, white mica chemistry (celadonite content of 0.23–0.47), preservation of igneous plagioclase phenocrysts, and the metamorphic mineral assemblage, all indicate maximum epidote–amphibolite facies conditions. Single-spot Rb/Sr dates were calculated from white mica using initial 87Sr/86Sr values obtained by titanite and epidote. Results are similar for both rocks, providing weighted averages of 352.4 ± 4.1 Ma (MSWD: 0.6; n: 24) and 349.3 ± 2.5 Ma (MSWD: 0.4; n: 31). The rocks are interpreted to have the same structural and metamorphic history; thus, a pooled weighted average of 350.1 ± 5.3 Ma (2σ) is reported as the timing of white mica (re)crystallization during S1 and L1 development in epidote–amphibolite facies conditions. This event is bracketed by the timing of blueschist-facies metamorphism for the subjacent middle (c. 364 Ma) and lower (c. 345–341 Ma) allochthons, associated with an east/southeast-plunging L1. Considering the different structural and metamorphic histories of the LMC compared to the subjacent allochthons, it is likely that the complex was extracted from the Teplá-Barrandian upper plate due to subduction erosion prior to collective exhumation and stacking of the Karkonosze-Izera Massif. Within the Tethyan belt, the NW-Iranian block is bound by two sutures, the Sevan-Akera suture in the north, and the Zagros suture in the south, where the pre-Cambrian geology is poorly constrained. Lower-Middle Cambrian sandstone in NW Iran is represented by quartz and feldspar dominated sub-arkose and sub-litharenite with well-developed cross bedding structures. They are interlayered with shale and limestone and overlain unconformably by Middle Cambrian dolomite. Here we describe and present U–Pb ages of the detrital zircon and rutile together with in-situ ε-Hf data from Lower to Middle Cambrian sandstones. Some zircons are characterized by oscillatory zoning and Th/U ratios of 0.3 to 2.0, pointing to an igneous provenance. Ages of the detrital zircons range from 481 to 2762 Ma, whereby the majority of zircons have ages between 524 and 1000 Ma (Neoproterozoic), and small peaks at 1800–2000 and 2400–2600 Ma. Late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic zircons (1100–1750 Ma) are absent in the detrital record which is a distinctive feature of Gondwana-related detrital zircons. Detrital rutile has elevated Cr contents and variable Zr content (88 to 1087 ppm), suggesting derivation mainly from amphibolite-facies meta-basic rocks. U–Pb rutile ages range from 561 to 1253 Ma. Initial ε-Hf values of the Neo-Proterozoic zircons range from -10 to 20, suggesting an association of highly depleted mantle and crustal magmas. Thus, the Lower-Middle Cambrian sandstones in Iranian Azerbaijan were supplied from a Neoproterozoic igneous and metamorphic provenance. Sandstone whole-rock major and trace elements are in accordance with a detrital material provenance from continental granitoids and Precambrian recycled sediments. These results support the hypothesis that Iranian Azerbaijan Cambrian detritus was supplied from repetitive recycling of the crystalline basement and related sedimentary cover of the Saharides and the Arabian-Nubian Shield and deposited in a passive-margin setting in northern Gondwana land. Our results show a close geological tie between Iranian Azerbaijan, Sanandaj-Sirjan, Zagros, Alborz, and other Gondwana-Land-derived units in terms of Early Paleozoic detritus sources. Geochemical and geochronologic data are presented for meta-mafic to meta-felsic rocks along the Paleo-Tethys Suture in the Binalood Mountains east of Neyshabur, NE Iran. The rocks have a late Cambrian age (U–Pb zircon, ~ 490 Ma) and were metamorphosed in the Early Jurassic (40Ar/39Ar amphibole and plagioclase, 199–192 Ma). The rocks of this suite are alkaline and sub-alkaline (tholeiitic). The alkaline rocks are enriched in light relative to heavy rare earth elements, and do not show depletion of high-field strength elements on primitive mantle-normalized multi-element diagrams; they are similar to ocean island basalts (OIB). The tholeiitic rocks are depleted in Nb and Ta and have higher MgO and lower TiO2 than the alkaline rocks. Both types have similar, high and variable 87Sr/86Sr(i) isotopic compositions of 0.7044 to 0.7082 and 143Nd/144Nd(i) values of 0.5118 to 0.5122. The alkaline rocks are lower-degree partial melts than the tholeiitic rocks and were generated at greater depths; they likely originated from a garnet pyroxenite-rich source. The spatial, temporal, and geochemical relationships of early Paleozoic meta-mafic to felsic rocks along the Paleo-Tethys Suture (e.g., Shahrud, Jajarm, Binalood, Torbat-e-Jam) substantiate the role of a mantle plume in continental breakup along the northern margin of Gondwana and a late Cambrian-Ordovician onset of rifting that resulted in the opening of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.
